Going over revised plans with my dad, while we were on a short trip to Canada. It was always good to sit down seriously during the day, under good light, and study the plans. But some of the best ideas came from looking at them in more casual settings. Like, say, a noisy bar after a couple good BC beers.
Context changes perspective. I found that if you’re always in the same place and in the same mood when looking at plans, you risk always seeing them the same way. You might imagine the house very differently in the summer vs. the winter, when you’re tired vs. energetic, when you’re feeling social vs. wanting space. You’ll be in a lot of different states and have a lot of different needs when living in the house, and it was helpful for me to bring some of that into the design process.
